Hawaiian Shaved Ice

During the hot summers when we lived in Louisville, there was a little stand down the road from our apartment that sold Hawaiian shaved ice.  They had about a million different flavors.  It was the perfect simple, summer treat to cool down and beat the heat.  I couldn’t find the actual place online, nor do I know if it’s still around.  If you, please comment.  I believe it was in Pleasure Ridge Park near the high school.

Tim Horton’s

During my college years, I spent time in Canada on three different trips, with most of our time in the cities of Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.  One highlight of each trip was the pleasure of getting to enjoy Tim Bits and other delectable donuts from Tim Hortons.  I hear it’s named after a hockey player.  I don’t know enough about hockey to vouch for that.  I just know that it is one of my favorite donut shops!

Fish and chips

In 1999, my wife and I lived in Worcester, England, for four months.  During that time, we had the cruel pleasure of enjoying a variety of delicious British food that I’ve not quite found an equivalent for stateside.  One of those, is the popular fish and chips.  We even enjoyed it served in paper!  I would gladly give up a handful of American burger places for one local shop that could make traditional, British fish and chips.  (Pass the vinegar please!)

Chicago-style Hot Dog

I grew in a small town in northern Illinois.  That meant any major field trip, concert, sports event, etc. led me to Chicago.  There I discovered how something as simple as a hot dog could be a mouth full of delicious goodness.  I have not eaten them in Chicago enough to claim any one location is best.  But I do know that when I can find one served like they do in the city, I enjoy every single bite!
